The Green Bay Packers are a US football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They ended the 1960 season with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Each year the season is preceded by a training camp to prepare players. Vince Lombardi was coach of the Green Bay Packers in 1961. He famously walked into the locker room on the first day of camp, held up a football, and said to the gathered players, “Gentleman, this is a football.”
Lombardi had a reputation as a coach who took nothing for granted. He was coaching a group of professional athletes who had made it to the championship game the prior season but methodically began training at the very fundamentals.
We can apply Lombardi’s approach to cybersecurity. Attackers exploit the same vulnerabilities due to organizations failing in the fundamentals of information security.
Vince Lombardi insisted on his players being masters of the fundamentals. His teams won multiple championships as a result. The example set by Lombardi applies equally to football and the field of information security. Success in both requires a mastery of the fundamentals.
